National Environment Management Authority (NEMA)

The National Environment Management Authority – NEMA (https://www.nema.go.ke/) is a government agency charged with the implementation of all policies relating to environment. NEMA is mandates with the responsibility to ensure sustainable management of the environment through exercising general supervision and coordination over matters relating to the environment and to be the principal instrument of government in the implementation of all policies relating to the environment.

Among the functions of the authority include coordinating environmental management activities, taking stock of the natural resources, advising on land use planning, undertaking research, investigation and surveys in the field of environment and mobilizing and monitoring the use of financial and human resources for environmental management. NEMA is further charged with regulating, monitoring and assessing activities to ensure that the environment, enforcing environmental standards and undertaking environmental education, public awareness and public participation programmes.
