The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives and governed by the National Standards Council. The body was established in 1989 by the UNBS Act Cap 327 and mandated to formulate and promote the use of standards, enforcing standards Ensuring fairness in trade and precision in industry and assuring the quality of locally manufactured products to enhance the competitiveness of exports in regional and international markets.

In its mission UNBS targets to provide standards, measurements and conformity assessment services for improved quality of life thereby becoming a leading institution of international repute in provision of sustainable standardization services.

UNBS is occupied in the provision of various services including harmonization, issuance and creation of standards, product testing, products and systems certifications and overall market surveillance to ensure that products comply with the requirements set out in relevant standards and do not endanger public health, safety or any other aspect of public interest protection while at the same time building confidence among members of the public.
