Rwanda Environmental Management Agency (REMA)

The Rwanda Environmental Management Agency (REMA) is the state run authority responsible for ensuring that environmental issues and climate change are integrated into Rwanda’s development. Precisely REMA is charged with effectively dealing with mainstream environmental concerns and climate change, reducing the countries vulnerability to climate change, controlling pollution and ensure environmental regulations for sustainable development are followed and supporting environmental research and planning for sustainable development and livelihoods.

REMA in its mission aims to promote and ensure the protection of the environment and sustainable management of natural resources while maintaining a sound environmental management and rational use of natural resources in order to contribute to the national aspirations for sustainable development.

Among the main responsibilities of REMA include implementation of Rwanda’s environmental policy, advise government on environmental matters, conduct thorough inspection of environmental management, mitigate against climate change and conduct research in the field of environment. REMA is also expected to ensure projects comply with environmental laws, participate in strategies to prevent environmental degradation, advice and technical support to individuals or entities engaged in natural resources management and environmental conservation, information sharing and overall environment monitoring and assessment.

The agency is also responsible for developing a green, circular economy approach for the country’s economic transformation with the framework of the National Strategy for Transformation in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and the Rwanda Green Fund (FONERWA) so as to ensure a low-carbon development path for the country’s fast-growing economy through resource efficiency in all productive sectors.
