The Government of Rwanda (GoR), with support from the African Development Bank (AfDB), has officially launched the Leather Value Chain Project, a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing Rwanda’s leather industry through value addition, increased export potential, and job creation.
This project, funded by the Fund for African Private Sector Assistance (FAPA) to the amount of USD 1 million and implemented by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MINICOM), seeks to strengthen Rwanda’s industrial capacity by improving infrastructure, boosting private sector participation, and equipping local businesses with the necessary technical expertise to compete in regional and international markets.
Through this collaboration, the Government of Rwanda and AfDB will focus on supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the leather sector, improving production facilities, and facilitating access to financing for local entrepreneurs. Additionally, targeted training programs will be conducted to build industry expertise, ensuring that Rwanda’s leather manufacturers can meet global standards and increase competitiveness.
The project is expected to deliver significant economic impact, including the creation of employment opportunities, enhanced export revenues, and the promotion of sustainable production practices. With improved leather processing capabilities and increased access to markets, the initiative aligns with Rwanda’s broader strategy to develop its manufacturing sector and reduce dependency on imports.
