THE AFRICAN LEATHER AND LEATHER PRODUCTS INSTITUTE (ALLPI) AND THE AFRICAN UNION- INTERAFRICAN BUREAU FOR ANIMAL RESOURCES (AU-IBAR) INK PARTNERSHIP DEAL

The African Leather And Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) and The African Union- Interafrican Bureau For Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on a strategic partnership to establish a framework for cooperation with respect to all matters of common interest that arise in the fields of hides and skins in Africa.

The collaboration brings together African Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) expertise as the lead support institution support the development of the leather sector in the region and African Union- Interafrican Bureau For Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) as the specialized technical office of the African Union Commission (AUC) mandate covers all aspects of animal resources, including livestock, fisheries and wildlife, across the entire African continent. This partnership is a demonstration to the commitment of both organizations to sharing common interest on focus to promote and support growth within the Leather and Leather Products Sector.

Key initiatives under the MOU:

  • Capacity building: the aim is to build competencies and enhance knowledge to develop the leather sector e.g. in areas such as animal feeding and slaughterhouse practices;
  • Data and information collection: the framework will enable the effective utilization of the resources of both organizations in the collection and proper utilization of leather data sector and information
  • Facilitate formation of clusters: this will ensure effective market supply and reduce transportation cost;
  • Research, training and technology transfer:
  • Promote traceability, marketing and support for the leather value chain
  • Establish advocacy awareness networks for the African leather sector

The agreement was signed in the sidelines of the just concluded COMESA Regional Leather Value Chain Strategy 2025-2029 validation workshop in Nairobi.
