LEATHER APEX PROFILE


Leather Apex is an umbrella body that brings together Leather Associations along the leather value chain in Kenya. These include collectors of hides and skins, tanneries, producers/manufacturers of leather products and marketers. It also embraces affiliate membership of support institutions that include development agencies both public and private sectors and institutions of learning.

Today, the society holds five national associations under its umbrella namely: 

  • Tanners Association of Kenya (TAK): Established in 2000 with 14 tanneries in Kenya 
  • Leather Articles Entrepreneurs Association (LAEA): LAEA is a membership-driven association that brings together players in the production and commercialization of leather articles made in Kenya. These articles include: commodities, products, items and objects made in Kenya or out of Kenyan leather. The association also incorporates creators of knowledge, processes, innovations, skills, information (in both digital and print media), ideas and materials necessary for the advancement of the leather articles Subsector. 
  • Kenya Footwear Manufacturers Association (KFMA): LAEA is a membership-driven association that brings together players in the production and commercialization of leather articles made in Kenya. These articles include commodities, products, items and objects made in Kenya or out of Kenyan leather. The association also incorporates creators of knowledge, processes, innovations, skills, information (in both digital and print media), ideas and materials necessary for the advancement of the leather articles Subsector. 
  • Cobblers Association of Kenya 
  • Hides and Skins Association

The Leather Apex embodies a national vision for the leather industry through harnessing the collective potential across industry associations while stimulating the industrious spirit of leather players. This is necessary for developing robust capabilities and competencies that yield sustainable competitive advantage.

Leather Apex’s mission is to promote the productivity and global competitiveness of Kenya’s leather Subsector through fostering a synergistic approach across the value chain in addressing capability challenges, developing business opportunities and advocating for the development of a favorable external business environment.

Leather Apex is driven by four main strategic objectives mainly: 

  • To foster cooperation and mutually enriching synergies among leather associations, business member organizations and firms in the leather industry and to promote good governance 
  • To enhance member association’s capability to develop globally competitive products 
  • To facilitate uptake of local and international business opportunities by member associations
  • To promote the development of an enabling business environment for the leather industry to flourish
