Leather Apex is an umbrella body that brings together Leather Associations across the leather value chain in Kenya in a bid to help the sub-sector players through synergy become more competitive and explore business opportunities and advocate for a more favorable business environment. The society resulted from coming together of five national associations representing collectors of hides and skins, tanneries, producers/manufacturers of leather products and marketers. It also embraces affiliate membership of support institutions that include development agencies both public and private sectors and institutions of learning.
The Leather Apex embodies a national vision for the leather industry through harnessing the collective potential across industry associations that will enable it become Kenya’s most effective and transformative instrument of a globally competitive and highly rewarding leather industry.This is necessary for developing robust capabilities and competencies that yield sustainable competitive advantage while stimulating the industrious spirit of leather players.
Leather Apex’s mission is to help the country realize the world’s sought-after leather and leather products Made-in-Kenya, through cooperation, manufacturing competitiveness , value creation and a favorable business environment. Kenya’s leather Sub-sector can only achieve this through fostering a synergistic approach across the value chain in addressing capability challenges, developing business opportunities and advocating for the development of a favorable external business environment.
Leather Apex is driven by four main strategic objectives including to foster cooperation and mutually enriching synergies among leather associations, business member organizations and firms in the leather industry and to promote good governance. The society also aims to enhance member association’s capability to develop globally competitive products, to facilitate uptake of local and international business opportunities by member associations and to promote the development of an enabling business environment for the leather industry to flourish.
Today, the society has five national associations under its umbrella namely the Tanners Association of Kenya (TAK), Leather Articles Entrepreneurs Association (LAEA), the Kenya Footwear Manufacturers Association (KFMA), Cobblers Association of Kenya (CAK) and the Kenya Hides and Skins Association (KeHSA).
